about

Winter is my favourite time of year as the days begin to darken and the wind rattles the bones.

The title for this record is borrowed from a collection of Tove Jansson’s short stories called A Winter Book. I’ve often felt a kindred spirit in Tove. She certainly had a melancholy and a quiet gloom that I can understand. But my winter daydream isn’t about the cliches log fires and hot wine (although I love that too) but of winter’s deep melancholy; The yearning. The midwinter dark. The happy sadness.

There is a musicality to winter which is difficult to articulate in prose, but I hear it in the fractured synths of the Korg PolySix, the icy bells of the Wavestation and the deep long bases of the MS20. It is here that words begin to fail, I so invite you to join me on this deep, melancholic musical journey of A Winter Record.

This album was originally released as a free download for Patreons in December 2018. This version has a few minor changes, particularly to the balance of sounds of Lulea, Original Nature and Mor.
Kafka, Lulea, Silver Cliffs, Original Nature and Mor were written by me Benjamin Berry for Fear of Tigers at my former home studio in Greenwich, Southeast London, except The Winter Bonfire and Return of the Sun which were written and recorded at my new home.
