This album was made over the spring and early summer of 2020. I had been at a low ebb both mentally and financially and I felt that making this record might offer half an answer to these problems. If it was a failure at least I could move on and do something else with my life. It also offered a sense of closure.

I’d had an incredible response from the first instalment of Cossus Snufsigalonica yet subsequent albums, although they had their moments, hadn’t generated the same enthusiasm. I thought long and hard about leaving music for good. One way or another (I thought...) this record would help that decision along. In the end, that big moment of catharsis never quite came.There was no definitive answer. But here I am almost 12 months later still making music and I’ve done some of my best work over this last year.

This album is what it is. There are moments I’m extremely fond of, particularly in the opening three tracks but of course, being the one pressing the buttons and knowing something of how the tracks are created I’m never the best one to judge. If you’d like to hear me talk about the creative process in detail and hear the genesis of some of these tracks you can listen to the podcast series which plots my journey in real time which is available on the Patreon Only version of this release. You’ll also hear lots of ideas that didn’t get used and something of my philosophy of creativity.

During the creation of the album I put some effort into getting folks to support the project on Patreon. This has most certainly helped me keep going emotionally and financially over this past year. If you ever listen to my podcast I often say “I couldn’t do this without you”. You might think this is just something I repeat as a way of thanking people but it’s incredibly sincere and heartfelt. I’m not a natural marketeer and I hate pushing myself forward to people. In many ways I blush to be ‘in business’ with my music. Without the people who support me every month there would be no new music and I would have stopped doing the Guestlist after week three. Having something to work for has given me a pride that I never had before and a reason to get up in the morning, rather than languishing in the empty abyss of a blank screen. It gives me purpose and a reason to be. Thank you to each and everyone of you, you really do make this possible.

We can never know what the future holds. I’ve realised that any grand plans or predictions I make usually come to nought so I’ll hold off on saying what’s next. What I can say is that in this moment is that I feel enthused and the frisson of creative possibility crackles away. I’m writing this near the first anniversary of lockdown here in the UK. It’s been a tough year for many of us, but I hope when this is all over I can get out and have a drink with some of you folks.
