I probably enjoyed creating this remix more than any other I’ve done in part because of the A&R guy. The A&Rs (record label people) I’m used to (typically trendy types in London) rarely if ever have any musical training, which makes it very difficult to communicate about something they don’t like in a track. Instead of using musical terminology they’ll use adjectives such as ‘euphoric’ or ‘laid back’, words which can mean a million different things depending on your frame of reference. I think music industry people (and music journalists) should have elementary music lessons so they can understand basics terminology around tempo, melody, rhythm, velocity, nuance etc. A grade one piano or voice qualification is much easier than getting a driving licence for example and much of it could be done on youtube.

This remix was special as the A&R guy was a string arranger and was able to give very specific feedback such as on the time signature and a lot of detail on the synths. We made loads of different versions of this remix to get what he wanted. Normally this is really frustrating as A&R people lack the vocabulary and it’s hard to know what they really mean, however in this case, not only was he able to communicate effectively, he made some really really good decisions. The remix was far better for it.

That aside, I have since come to love Max Richter and many of the folks in that genre and look back at this with some fondness.
